General
Education and Training for Health Professionals encompass a large number of different professions involved in the implementation of measures relating to ensuring the overall health of the population. These include activities in the context of healthcare that are carried out upon or on behalf of the patient, in order to encourage, achieve, restore or improve his/her health.
Some of the schools and education and training programmes in this area have been set up within or in association with hospitals. These differ from the education and training provided in the final years of secondary education, in view of the fact that individuals commence training at a higher age and are required to fulfil admission requirements in terms of their trustworthiness and their medical health.
Education and Training for Healthcare Professionals include the training programmes provided by schools, in addition to courses for medical assistant professions (plastering assistants, operating theatre assistants, radiology assistants, disinfection assistants, doctor’s surgery assistants, assistant prosectors and laboratory assistants (Gips-, Operations-, Röntgen-, Desinfektions-, Ordinations- Obduktions- und Laborassistenz), and qualified medical assistants (Medizinische Fachassistenz), training programmes for emergency medical technicians, medical masseurs and therapeutic masseurs, training for assistant nurses or schools for nursing care as well as training for dental assistants.
The admission requirements for an education and training programme in these healthcare professions differ in each case.
For admission to an education and training programme in schools or to education and training programmes for medical assistant professions, assistant nurses and education and training programmes for other healthcare professions, it is essential that an applicant has completed his/her ninth year of general education, that his/her somatic and mental health is sufficient and that he/she is sufficiently trustworthy. In some cases, an entry test may be required and applicants must also be at least 17 years of age.
Apart from this there are Bachelor's degree courses in Healthcare Professions available at Universities of Applied Sciences, which provide courses in Dietology, Physiotherapy, Radiological Technology, Occupational Therapy, Biomedical Analysis, Speech Therapy, Orthoptics, Qualified Nursing Care and Midwifery.
The training for music therapists takes place in form of bachelor or master courses at a University of Applied Sciences or bachelor, master or diploma studies at a university.
Further information regarding the contents of individual education and training programmes, the professions involved and the range of activities undertaken, about how to exercise one of the professions involved and any additional qualifications available can be found in the brochure "Gesundheitsberufe in Österreich" (Healthcare professions in Austria), which is published by the Federal Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection.
