General
Universities offer programmes in the humanities and cultural sciences, engineering, art, veterinary medicine, natural sciences, law, social sciences, economics, theology and medicine as well as teacher training and interdisciplinary studies. The providers can be public or private universities.
The following types of studies are currently in place:
- Bachelor's and Master's programmes
are the most common forms of study. The Bachelor's degree programme serves to provide academic or artistic professional training and qualification in the relevant subject area and leads to the academic degree "Bachelor" with a corresponding supplement (e.g. of Arts, of Science). Master's programmes serve to deepen and supplement the scientific and artistic professional training or vocational training on the basis of Bachelor's programmes and, depending on the subject area, lead to a "Master's" degree with the corresponding addition (e.g. of Arts, of Science) or "Diplom-Ingenieur/in" (graduate engineer). - Diploma degree programmes (Diplomstudien):
primarily serve to provide in-depth scientific or artistic professional training and last eight to twelve semesters, consisting of two or three study sections, each concluding with a diploma examination. The degree entitles the holder to acquire a diploma degree, e.g. "Magister/Magistra", "Diplom-Ingenieur/in" (exception: medical studies conclude with "Doktor/in der gesamten Heilkunde" or "Doktor/in der Zahnheilkunde"). There are now only a few diploma programmes. - Doctorate programmes and PhD programmes (Doctor of Philosophy)
build on the Degree study programme or Master's degree programmes at universities, Universities of Applied Sciences or University Colleges of Teacher Education and mainly serve to further develop the ability to carry out independent academic work. The degree entitles the holder to obtain the relevant doctoral degree ("Dr." or "PhD").
The next step:
After completing a degree programme at a university, graduates have the following options, among others:
- Immediate employment in the relevant specialist area
- Following successful completion of a Bachelor's degree programme: Master's degree programme at a University of Applied Sciences or university
- Following successful completion of a Master's degree programme: doctoral studies at a university
- Attendance at courses for continuing and higher level qualifications
- Self-employment in regulated (if necessary, with proof of practical experience and after completing a qualifying examination) and non-regulated industries or non-regulated professions
